Prof. Bill Casey Receives 2010 EAG Science Innovation Award

Let’s congratulate Prof. Bill Casey for receiving the Werner Stumm Medal and 2010 Science Innovation award from the European Association for Geochemistry. The Science innovation award recognizes a ‘mid-career’ scientist who has made outstanding and innovative contributions to Geochemistry. Professor Kauzlarich Elected as AAAS Fellow

Congratulations to Professor Susan Kauzlarich who has just been elected to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for her efforts to advance science. This is a great honor for Susan and for the Department. Susan is one of eight UC Davis faculty members elected as an AAAS fellows this year. Susan has also just returned from meeting President Obama honoring her Presidential Mentoring Award. See links below for more details

Professor Ting Guo Receives Chancellor’s Achievement Award for ACS SEED Program

Congratulations to our Graduate Students receiving GAANN Fellowships

Congratulations to the following students who were selected as GAANN fellows for 2009-10: Brandon Mercado, Ngon Tran, Michelle Kim, Elisa Gutierrez, and Ying Liu. This program is designed to provide research support and a mentored teaching experience to prepare students for academic careers. Fellowship funds have been made available through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) program and the University of California.

Department Receives GAANN Award for Graduate Fellowships

The Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) award from the U.S. Department of Education is highly prestigious and will fund a number of graduate fellowships in the department, further contributing to the strength of our graduate program. The announcement came from senator Barbara Boxer’s office to Prof. Kauzlarich to inform her of the award. Congratulations to Prof. Franz and Kauzlarich who put together a great proposal. Thanks to all the faculty who helped with input and proof reading. Also, thanks to Carol Barnes, Aaron Morrison, Susan Olton, and Jane Lepisto for helping with all the statistics and logistics of getting the grant submitted.

Profs. Franz and Shaw receive 2009 NSF CAREER awards

Let’s congratulate Profs. Franz and Shaw who each received a 2009 NSF CAREER award. The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is the National Science Foundation’s most prestigious awards in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.

Welcome New Faculty: Shota Atsumi & Louise Berben

The Department of Chemistry is pleased to welcome our newest faculty members, Dr. Shota Atsumi and Dr. Louise Berben. Both will be focusing on energy-related research programs and will contribute strongly to the department and university under the Energy for the Future Initiative.

Professor Kauzlarich Wins Prestigous Presidential Mentoring Award

President Obama has named Professor Susan Kauzlarich as one of 22 recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.
